The 100x logistics advantage - 1 cubic metre of packed DefenCell will make over 100 cubic metres of barrier. No other Force Protection system comes close
Compact - on average 5 times more walling in a 40' ISO than gabions. Average 5935M3 of DefenCell barrier in one 40' ISO container. Average 1129M3 of gabions in one 40' ISO container.
Lightweight - on average 5 times lighter than gabions and up to 10 times lighter. One average unfilled M3 of DefenCell barrier weighs 2.23kgs One average unfilled M3 of gabions weighs 13.10kgs and can be up to 22.35kgs.
Strength - cellular structure provides considerable strength combined with built-in redundancy so if one cell is damaged the one behind will continue to provide protection and stability.
Mobility - DefenCell is easy to handle and transport and offers significant logistical advantages over sandbags and other barriers systems. Each unit is man portable, with a typical 4.9m long section, weighing less than 10kgs.
Easy Construction - DefenCell is easy to assemble and can be erected without major support equipment. Filling can be completed using standard mechanical handling equipment or by hand. The linear design of DefenCell units allow walls to be safely and quickly constructed.
Simplicity - DefenCell is modular in design and the barrier system comprises only five different units. Construction can be tailored in height, width and configuration to meet operational force protection requirements.
Packaging - all units packed in same standard pallets, 20 (or 40) per ISO container.
No Metal - all DefenCell units are 100% textile so no secondary shrapnel, no RF interference, no rust.
Easy Disposal - easy to remove and dispose, no wire baskets.
DefenCell is compatible with most operational defensive barrier systems and is ideal for enhancing existing barriers or replacing damaged and worn equipment in theatre. The enormous logistical and operational advantages of a lightweight, compact but durable barrier system make it an obvious choice for Expeditionary operations system. It can also be used for CIMIC operations when concrete barriers are being removed and a less 'aggressive' alternative is required while still retaining stand-off perimeter security and a degree of ballistic protection.
DefenCell's light weight does not compromise its ability to protect personnel and equipment. DefenCell has been bullet and blast tested to protect against small arms, cannons, mortars, artillery, VBIEDs and other fragmenting weapons.
DefenCell's all-textile construction minimizes risk of secondary fragmentation and RF interference sometimes caused by wire mesh gabions. |

- Logistics
-
The textile technology that is used in the production of DefenCell has created a fabric that is stronger, lighter and considerably more durable than other geotextiles. This results in products that are lighter and more compact to transport and provides the user with a significant logistical advantage over other protection products.
DefenCell is much easier to install and longer lasting than sandbags, lighter and non metallic compared to gabions, provides more structural strength than simple berms and, being filled on site, is much more compact to transport than pre-filled and concrete barriers.
As illustration, to create a 1.1m high, 0.7m wide, 3.2m long wall would require approximately (unfilled):ed to provide perimeter security, from enhancing existing security systems and fences, to providing structural integrity to long perimeter barriers. DefenCell can be built to virtually any height or width and profiled to provide protection against specific threats.

- DefenCell vs Sandbags
-
Military sandbags provided effective force protection barricades during the Great War, WWII and Vietnam, but are cumbersome and time-consuming to fill and install compared to modern force protection solutions. DefenCell provides armed forces with an efficient alternative to sandbag barricades that can be constructed in a fraction of the time.
Instead of the labour-intensive process of filling jute or polypropylene bags, DefenCell units can be filled rapidly using standard loaders in tandem with manual labour. Even the smallest DefenCell, the 3.6kg LITE, is the equivalent of 140 sandbags. The LITE can be filled in about 10-15 minutes using MHE compared to 3-4 hours with two soldiers working at 40 military sandbags per hour.
The DefenCell fabric has built in UV resistance and the non-woven composition ensures that damage from accidents, bullet holes or ballistics remains very localised. DefenCell can quickly be placed to provide ballistics protection, as well as to absorb shrapnel and blast shock waves. DefenCell features 100% nonwoven geotextile technology, making it lightweight, compact, easily deployable and durable in even the harshest environments.
- DefenCell vs Gabion Walls
-
Wire mesh gabion walls make up over 40% of the force protection defensive structures found in Iraq and Afghanistan. Similar in design to DefenCell, these gabions walls offer ballistics and explosion protection while requiring only minimal training and resources.
Wire mesh gabions were originally developed for flood protection and later used as force protection systems. As a result, most steel mesh gabions retained their metal-based mounting hardware when making the transition to military use. This wire mesh poses a risk of secondary fragmentation, RF interference, and thermal interference when used in combat operations.
Wire mesh gabions have saved countless lives, but the 20 year old design leaves room for improvement. DefenCell offers similar blast protection without the need for metal or plastic hardware.
DefenCell requires a smaller logistical footprint; one container of DefenCell provides equivalent force protection of 5 containers of standard wire mesh gabions. DefenCell is also man portable - meaning that it can easily be carried by rucksack for expedient force protection in remote locations without the need for special equipment.
DefenCell can also complement existing force protection systems DefenCell can be used for interior walls, tent compartmentalization, containerized housing units (CHUs), and critical asset protection alongside larger gabion perimeter walls. DefenCell will not only save space, but reduce the risk of secondary fragmentation when used in close proximity to soldiers and sensitive items.
- DefenCell vs Earth Berms
-
Earth berms, which are essentially a mound of earth or sand, are a quick force protection solution that offer temporary protection against ballistics and ordinance. Dating back to medieval times, earth berms were a critical defensive structure prevalent in early warfare. Today earth berms are being replaced by granular filled geotextile walls and concrete barriers to protect military personnel and equipment.
Using DefenCell to build a reinforced berm to a prescribed height will reduce the required footprint by two thirds with the significant resultant savings in time, fill material and labour.
